A Guide to Non-Toxic Oral Care: Toothpaste, Floss + Oil Pulling

There are some rituals we barely think about because we've done them for most of our lives.

Wake up. Brush your teeth. Floss. Rinse. Repeat before bed.

We spend so much time reading the ingredient lists on our skincare, thinking about what goes into our food, and making more intentional choices around the products we bring into our homes. But the products we put directly into our mouths every single day deserve that same attention.

Creating a more thoughtful oral care routine doesn't have to mean replacing everything in your bathroom overnight or adding ten new steps.

Sometimes, it's simply about looking at what you already use every day and finding an alternative that better aligns with the way you want to live.

Here are three simple places to begin.

1. Start With the Product You Use Every Day: Toothpaste

If there's one oral care product worth taking a closer look at, it's probably your toothpaste.

You use it morning and night, 365 days a year.

At OCASA, we carry a selection of Davids toothpastes because we wanted options for people looking for thoughtfully formulated, fluoride-free oral care without many of the ingredients they may personally prefer to avoid.

Davids toothpastes are made without SLS, artificial flavors, artificial colors or artificial preservatives, and they're packaged in recyclable aluminum tubes rather than conventional plastic toothpaste tubes.

Our collection includes both their classic formulas and their Hydroxi™ toothpastes made with nano-hydroxyapatite.

What is hydroxyapatite?

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring calcium-phosphate mineral and a major mineral component of our teeth and bones.

It has become increasingly popular in oral care, particularly in fluoride-free toothpastes. Research suggests hydroxyapatite toothpaste may have benefits for enamel remineralization and tooth sensitivity, although the evidence base for fluoride remains much larger and fluoride toothpaste continues to be recommended by major dental organizations for cavity prevention.

For us, it's about giving our customers choices.

If you're specifically looking for a fluoride-free toothpaste, hydroxyapatite is an ingredient worth learning about rather than simply choosing a toothpaste because the front of the tube says "natural."

2. Don't Forget What's Between Your Teeth

Brushing is only part of the ritual.

Your toothbrush can't effectively reach every tiny space between your teeth, which is where floss comes in. Cleaning between the teeth helps remove plaque and food debris from areas that brushing alone can miss.

It's also an incredibly easy place to make a more thoughtful swap.

We carry biodegradable floss as an alternative for those looking to reduce some of the plastic associated with conventional oral care.

It isn't a glamorous part of a wellness ritual.

But perhaps that's exactly the point.

Living more intentionally isn't always about buying something revolutionary. Sometimes it's simply finding a better version of something you've been using all along.

Brush. Floss. Repeat.

3. An Old-World Ritual: Oil Pulling

Long before colorful bottles of mouthwash filled bathroom cabinets, people were caring for their mouths in much simpler ways.

Oil pulling is a traditional practice associated with Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of India. The practice generally involves gently swishing an edible oil around the mouth before spitting it out.

Coconut oil has become one of the most popular oils used for the ritual today.

There has been research into oil pulling and its potential effects on plaque, oral bacteria and gum health. However, the scientific evidence remains limited, and the American Dental Association does not currently recommend oil pulling as a replacement for established oral hygiene practices.

And that's an important distinction.

We don't view oil pulling as a replacement for brushing or flossing.

We view it as an optional ritual that can live alongside them.

Our Hydroxi™ Oil Pulling Oral Rinse makes the traditional practice easy to incorporate into a modern bathroom ritual without needing to keep a jar of cooking coconut oil beside your toothbrush.

For some, it's another step in their morning routine. For others, it's something they reach for occasionally when they want their oral care ritual to feel a little more complete.

A Simpler Oral Care Ritual

Your oral care routine doesn't need twelve steps.

Start with the fundamentals:

Brush thoroughly. Clean between your teeth.

And if oil pulling is a tradition you'd like to incorporate, add it as an extra ritual rather than a substitute for those essentials.

What matters more than having a shelf full of products is having a routine you'll actually practice consistently.

Morning after morning.

Night after night.

Those small, ordinary rituals add up.

And we think the things you reach for every day deserve just as much consideration as the special things you use once in a while.

From the Desert Apothecary

Every product in our oral care collection was chosen to make those everyday rituals a little more intentional—from fluoride-free Davids toothpaste and hydroxyapatite formulas to biodegradable floss + coconut oil pulling rinse.

Because we don't need a hundred versions of everything.

We just want thoughtfully chosen ones.
