Why We Don’t Put Honey in Our Tallow Products

As more people take a second look at tallow for skincare, we’ve been thinking about something pretty simple: what actually belongs in the jar?

If you’ve spent any time looking into beef tallow skincare, you’ve probably noticed there are plenty of ways to formulate it. Some formulas include botanicals, essential oils or honey, while others keep things much more pared back. At Ocasa Botanica, we’ve chosen the latter. We start with 100% pasture-raised, grass-fed, grass-finished beef kidney suet and keep the formula intentionally simple, because we like tallow for what it already is: rich, naturally emollient and incredibly satisfying on the skin without needing much help.

That’s also why you won’t find honey in our tallow. It’s not because we think honey is bad for your skin, and it’s not because we think it doesn’t have a place in skincare. We simply don’t think our tallow needs it. For us, the point is to make a thoughtful, stable cream that puts the quality of the tallow first and lets the ingredient speak for itself.

Why We Keep Tallow Simple

There’s something refreshing about skincare that doesn’t require a chemistry degree to understand. Tallow has a long history of being used as a skin-conditioning ingredient, and its naturally occurring fatty acid composition is part of what makes it so interesting. When properly rendered and formulated into a cream, tallow creates a rich, moisturizing base without requiring a long list of supporting ingredients.

That simplicity is important to us because we’re not trying to turn tallow into something completely different. We want to make a genuinely good beef tallow moisturizer that highlights the qualities people have appreciated about tallow for generations, while fitting naturally into a modern skincare routine.

So, Why Not Add Honey?

Honey can absolutely have a place in skincare. It has been used traditionally for generations and can be incorporated into well-formulated cosmetic products. The reason we leave it out of our tallow products has more to do with formulation than whether honey is considered a “good” or “bad” ingredient.

Tallow is a fat, while honey naturally contains water and sugars. Once you introduce a water-containing ingredient into an otherwise anhydrous, fat-based cream, you change the nature of the formulation. Preservation, microbial stability, shelf life and texture all become different considerations.

That doesn’t make honey a poor skincare ingredient. It simply means that adding honey creates a different type of product, and we’re intentionally making a simple, fat-based tallow cream. We don’t feel the need to add another ingredient just because it has its own skincare benefits.

Is Tallow Better Without Honey?

For our formula, we believe it is. There’s a tendency in skincare to assume that if two ingredients are individually beneficial, putting them together must automatically create a better product. In reality, good formulation is less about collecting as many interesting ingredients as possible and more about choosing ingredients that work well together and serve a clear purpose.

Tallow already gives us the rich, conditioning base we’re looking for, so adding honey doesn’t solve a problem for us. Instead, it changes the formulation without bringing something we consider necessary to the finished cream. We’d rather put our attention into the quality of the tallow, how it’s prepared and how the final product feels on the skin.

Why Longevity Matters To Us

When we talk about longevity, we’re not talking about overnight transformations or dramatic promises about what tallow can do for your skin. We’re talking about creating a product that’s thoughtfully made, stable and enjoyable to use over time.

Our tallow is a simple, fat-based formula, which makes it different from a water-based moisturizer. Honey naturally contains water, so adding it changes how the product needs to be formulated, including considerations around preservation, stability, texture and shelf life. By leaving water-containing ingredients like honey out, we can keep the formula straightforward and focused on tallow.

Tallow has been used for generations, and we don’t think it needs to be constantly reinvented to stay relevant. There’s something to be said for finding a formula that makes sense and sticking with it.

Tallow Skincare Doesn’t Need To Be Complicated

One of the reasons people are rediscovering tallow skincare is that it can be incredibly straightforward. A small amount of tallow cream warmed between your fingertips can be worked into clean skin, and because tallow is rich and occlusive, you generally don’t need much to get that soft, moisturized feel. That simplicity feels particularly nice right now. The beauty industry has spent years adding more steps, more products and more ingredients to our routines, so there’s something refreshing about reaching for a moisturizer that doesn’t require a complicated ritual around it.

That doesn’t mean we think everyone needs to give up their serums, treatments or favorite moisturizers. We simply think there’s room for pure tallow skincare that can stand on its own and make sense as part of a real, everyday routine.

Why We Believe Tallow Is Stronger Without Honey

When we say that tallow is stronger without honey, we don’t mean that it becomes harsher or somehow more potent. We mean that the formula becomes more focused on the ingredient we actually set out to use. Our goal is to let tallow be the foundation of the product rather than surrounding it with additional ingredients simply because they sound appealing on a label. Every ingredient should have a reason for being there, and for our tallow, honey isn’t something we believe we need.

That’s ultimately what our approach comes down to. We’re less interested in creating the longest or most impressive ingredient list and more interested in creating a formula that makes sense from the beginning.

We’re Pro-Tallow, Not Anti-Honey

Honey can be a beautiful skincare ingredient, and there are plenty of formulas where it makes perfect sense. We simply don’t think it needs to be part of ours. At Ocasa Botanica, we’re interested in making simple, intentional tallow skincare that feels good to use, fits into a real routine and doesn’t rely on unnecessary extras. We want the product to be about the quality and character of the tallow rather than trying to make it into something it isn’t.

Sometimes, when you have a really good ingredient, the most thoughtful thing you can do is give it room to be exactly what it is.
