Essential oil free skincare: why we use herbal infusions in our skincare instead

A lot of skincare brands reach for essential oils because they're fast, concentrated, and easy to formulate with. We do the opposite on purpose. Every one of our tallow products is fragrance-free and essential-oil-free, infused with whole herbs instead.

Why essential oils can irritate sensitive skin

Essential oils are incredibly concentrated. It can take pounds of raw plant material to produce a single ounce of oil - that's what makes them so potent, and it's also exactly why they're one of the most common causes of skin irritation and sensitization, even in products marketed as "natural." Some, like citrus oils, can even make skin more reactive to sunlight. For skin that's already dry, sensitive, or breakout-prone, that level of concentration is often the last thing it needs.

This is part of why so many people say they've tried natural skincare before and it didn't work. Often, the culprit isn't the base ingredient at all. It's the essential oils layered on top of it.

What makes herbal-infused tallow different

Herbal infusions work differently than essential oils. Instead of extracting one isolated, highly concentrated compound, I infuse whole herbs — lavender buds, calendula flowers, vanilla + coffee beans, frankincense resin — directly into the carrier oil itself, using the traditional folk method: herbs and oil combined by feel rather than precise measurement, then set aside to steep slowly. Depending on how strong I want a particular infusion, I let it sit anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before it's ready.

It's not extracted or concentrated down to its sharpest parts. It just sits there, oil and herb together, for as long as it takes. This method takes longer because it's a slower and more gentler method. But it means you're getting the plant's fuller and more balanced character.

This is also part of why herbal-infused products take longer to make than something formulated with essential oils, which can be blended and bottled the same day. Infusions ask for patience; weeks, sometimes months, before a batch is ready. We think that time is part of what makes it worth it.

Fragrance-free, essential-oil-free tallow for sensitive skin

Every jar of our tallow is fragrance-free and essential-oil-free by choice.  It's not that we couldn't add essential oils (plenty of brands do), and plenty of people use them without issue. It's that we don't think your skin needs them to feel the benefit of the plant.

If you've tried tallow before and it left your skin more irritated than soothed, this might be exactly why. Herbal infusion lets the plant do its work quietly, without asking your skin to handle something as concentrated as an essential oil. Our unscented, lavender-infused, and calendula-infused tallows are all formulated this way.

Honestly, it just comes down to this: I want to know exactly what's in my own skincare, so that's what I make for you too.
