Becoming a mom has a way of making you look at ingredients differently.
Suddenly, you’re not only thinking about what you put on your own skin. You’re thinking about what touches your baby’s skin, what’s left on your hands when you pick them up, and whether you really need all those ingredients in the first place.
And the more you look, the more complicated skincare can start to feel.
I believe this is one of those times when simpler can be better.
Tallow has been used traditionally as a simple, rich skin moisturizer, and its naturally occurring fatty acids make it especially beautiful for skin that needs extra nourishment.
At OCASA, our facial tallow creams are water-free, essential-oil-free and made without added fragrance. We start with pasture-raised, grass-fed + grass-finished beef suet and slowly dry-render it ourselves before blending it with thoughtfully selected botanical oils.
Here are a few simple ways tallow can fit into a gentle skincare ritual for mom + baby.
Why choose a simple tallow cream?
Baby skin is delicate, and new-mom skin can be surprisingly sensitive too.
This isn't necessarily the time for complicated formulas, strong fragrances or a bathroom shelf overflowing with products.
A simple tallow cream provides rich, concentrated moisture without requiring a long ingredient list.
Because our tallow creams contain no added water, you only need a very small amount.
For mom + baby, our Nourishing Unscented Tallow Cream is the formula I would reach for first.
For baby's dry, delicate skin
If little cheeks, arms or legs are feeling dry, a tiny amount of a simple moisturizer can help soften and condition the skin.
Warm a very small amount of our Unscented Tallow Cream between clean fingertips and gently smooth it over the dry area.
And when I say a little, I really mean a little.
Our tallow contains no added water, so it's incredibly concentrated.
Always patch test first when introducing a new skincare product to your baby, and avoid applying products to broken or irritated skin without guidance from your pediatrician.
What about the diaper area?
Between moisture, diapers and constant friction, the skin around the diaper area goes through a lot.
Water-free balms and ointments can provide an occlusive layer over the skin that helps protect it from moisture and friction.
If you're using tallow as part of your baby's everyday skin routine, keep things simple and choose an unscented, essential-oil-free formula.
And remember that not every red bottom is simply dry skin.
If your baby has a persistent, severe, blistering or unusual rash, talk with your pediatrician rather than trying to treat it with skincare alone.
And what about mom?
Baby gets a lot of attention after birth.
Mom's skin deserves some, too.
Pregnancy and the postpartum period can bring plenty of changes, and your old skincare routine may suddenly not feel quite right anymore.
And when you're caring for a newborn, a 10-step skincare routine probably isn't high on the priority list anyway.
This is where I love going back to three simple steps:
CLEANSE. HYDRATE. SEAL.
1. Cleanse gently.
You don't need your skin to feel squeaky clean. Cleanse away the day without intentionally stripping away every bit of your skin's natural oils.
2. Add hydration.
Mist clean skin with a hydrosol or toner—or simply leave your skin slightly damp.
Our Hydrating Bulgarian Rose Facial Toner is made with just 100% pure rose hydrosol and provides that simple water-based hydration step.
3. Seal it in.
While your skin is still slightly damp, warm a pea-sized amount of tallow between your fingertips and gently press it into your skin.
The damp skin provides hydration.
The tallow helps seal that moisture in.
Don't forget your hands
New motherhood also means a lot of hand washing.
And a lot of hand washing can mean very dry hands.
Our Tallow + Lanolin Hand Balm was created for exactly the kind of skin that needs something richer than traditional hand lotion.
It combines pasture-raised tallow with grass-fed sheep lanolin, organic Arizona jojoba oil and organic beeswax in a concentrated, water-free balm.
Keep it beside the sink or on your nightstand and massage a small amount into dry hands, knuckles and cuticles whenever they need some extra care.
And then there's postpartum hair...
This one deserves a conversation of its own.
Postpartum shedding is extremely common. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can alter the normal hair-growth cycle, and after birth many of those hairs enter the shedding phase.
So if you're suddenly seeing a lot more hair in the shower, you're certainly not alone.
And while no hair oil or herbal product should promise to treat postpartum hair loss, this can still be a beautiful time to start caring for your scalp and the hair you have.
We recently introduced two botanical hair rituals for exactly that kind of intentional scalp care.
Our lightweight Rosemary Elixir is made with only three ingredients:
Water. Certified Organic Alcohol. Certified Organic Rosemary Leaf.
That's it.
It's lightweight, doesn't leave the roots oily and doesn't need to be rinsed out.
Apply directly to the scalp and gently massage it in 2–3 times per week as part of your regular scalp-care ritual.
For a richer treatment, Tamed Mane combines seven botanical oils with eight whole herbs, including rosemary, hops, nettle, horsetail and marshmallow root.
The botanicals are slowly infused into the oils to create a concentrated treatment that nourishes the scalp while conditioning dry, dull strands and supporting stronger, fuller, healthier-looking hair.
Massage a small amount into the scalp before shampooing and leave on for 20–30 minutes, or use a few drops through the lengths and ends for softness and shine.
Think of it this way:
Rosemary Elixir = lightweight scalp care.
Tamed Mane = deeper scalp + hair nourishment.
If postpartum shedding is severe, patchy, painful or continues longer than expected, talk with your healthcare provider. Postpartum hair changes can have different causes, and sometimes it's worth looking beyond the bathroom shelf.
